Recommending products to a customer is a marketing activity. We believe at HelpfulCrowd that recommending or promoting products in an review request email potentially creates two issues:
It creates a distraction for the customer when the primary focus is to collect a review
It potentially creates a 'grey' area in connection with the CAN-SPAM Act as to whether the purpose of the email is commercial (promotional/marketing) or transactional in nature
Whilst HelpfulCrowd will never allow the promotion or recommending of products in emails, we are working on a number of features that will provide an opportunity to cross sell and recommend other products at the appropriate opportunity.
